If I say, Golden Arches, there is likely no one reading this who wouldn’t immediately think of McDonald’s. It has been a staple in the fast food industry for nearly 80 years. In February, Reader’s Digest published an article in their Food Fun & News section revealing the First McDonald’s Menu Ever. It consisted of only nine items. Yes, you read that right, only nine choices. What stood out to me was that there were only two sandwiches on the menu – a hamburger and a cheeseburger. Today, their menu has an impressive 25+ sandwich options. Two of those options however are still the classic hamburger and cheeseburger. While McDonald’s didn’t invent the cheeseburger, they did, indeed, revolutionize it.
This made me start thinking of how a company like Conexus could be more like McDonald’s. Silly, right? We specialize in smart building technologies and they are cheeseburger experts, but before there was the Big Mac with its special sauce or the Quarter Pounder with Cheese, they had to perfect the basic burger. Looking at their menu over the years, it has evolved and catered to food fad – remember the McRib? They have also had to fight to maintain market share, relevance and profitability as competition crowded into the fast-food space. Amid all the noise, every industry has that one menu item that is a staple to success. Not dissimilarly, in the ever-changing world of technology, it is easy to get distracted by the latest trend or capability while staying ahead of the competition.
Growing in technical knowledge and keeping up with the constant evolution of the industry is absolutely critical, but a focus on perfecting our cheeseburger is what will keep us in the game. Transforming environments to optimize comfort, safety and efficiently by nimbly utilizing our non-proprietary smart building systems. That is our cheeseburger. If we continually serve that up, our Big Mac will undoubtedly follow.
What’s your cheeseburger?
