What are CCTV Systems?

In use since the 1940s, closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems are a cost-effective monitoring solution for both public and private security. The system uses cameras to capture footage and display the images or video on a connected monitor. CCTV systems do not transmit publicly.

There is a wide range of camera types to choose from, depending on the application. Cameras typically connect to monitors via direct cable or WiFi.

Components of CCTV Systems

CCTV systems are not overly complex but make a powerful addition to security efforts. The most challenging part is the installation, which requires expert guidance to select the proper equipment and placement.

Cameras – A variety of camera types allow for capturing images and video. Depending on the application, choose from high-definition camera options, dome or bullet-shaped cameras, and infrared/night vision or thermal heat detection. IP (internet protocol) cameras transmit image data wirelessly.

Power supply – Typically, cameras use a hard-wired power box or ethernet, but the latest models have solar power options. With a battery backup, CCTV systems will function even during a power outage.

Monitors – This is where the camera images can be viewed and monitored by staff, depending on the facility’s security needs. Modern systems also have wireless options for remote monitoring.

Recording devices – To save video for later viewing, CCTV systems use recording devices, such as direct video recorders (DVR) or network video recorders (NVR). DVRs are used with wired systems, while NVRs can be used with either a wired or wireless system.

CCTV System Benefits

With a CCTV system installed, you’ll be in control of your facility’s safety. The benefits include:

  • Prevention of crime, vandalism, and damage
  • Detection of suspicious incidents, so you can focus security efforts
  • Awareness of all activities in and around your business
  • Quick access to information for rapid emergency response

Integration Options

The open protocols used by modern CCTV systems make integration with other systems (such as alarm networks and access control) possible, fast, and straightforward.

Combining a CCTV system with an access management system is helpful:

  • Trigger video when access is activated, which makes for easy footage retrieval
  • Verify identities to prevent the use of stolen access devices
  • Get the information that’s needed, fast, with a centralized management interface

Primary Uses for CCTV Systems

Many businesses use CCTV systems to enhance the safety of their facility and protect their assets and employees.

Perimeter surveillance – Monitoring activities around a building increases security preparedness

Loss prevention – The system records instances of theft for appropriate follow-up

Crime deterrence – A CCTV system may prevent criminals from targeting a facility

Accident investigation – Recording on-site events expedite incident response
